And that's to say nothing of the immensely lucid, incisive, prescient and thoroughly convincing content of Hitchens's thesis that religion is man made and presents the greatest threat to the continuation of human prosperity. It's simply daunting and highly educational to listen to this book. ![]() The most impressive thing about Hitchens and his writing is probably his vocabulary. This book spurred me to research Hitchens and I discovered he is quite a remarkable man. Guaranteed to be one of the best credits you'll ever use. Hitchens once said in an interview that one should read books which make one feel inadequate (in the positive intellectual sense). When he says "I" he really means it because its HIM talking. He knows just where to put the emphasis, where to sound incredulous. Juxtapose this non-issue with the insuperable benefit of having Hitchens read his own work. ![]() ![]() Let me elucidate this for you: on perhaps 3 occasions in a book of more than 8 hours, Hitchens ends a sentence so quietly that its very hard to hear what he's saying. My fear is that you will read those reviews and decide on that point alone to eschew purchasing this book. Okay, I'm officially angry-people have written reviews here claiming Hitchens's reading of his book is inaudible or full of mumbling. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is only the birth of Beccah that tethers her: "Blooming in the boundary between life and death, this child, with the tendril of her body, keeps me from crossing over and roots me to this earth." Beccah is in turns stifled and mortified by her mother's suffocating protectiveness, yet frightened by her absences into a spirit world of ravings and tyrannical ritual. Narrated in their two voices, what is harrowingly pieced together is the horror of Akiko's enslavement in a Japanese camp, her escape by abandoning her very name, her country and for a time her voice, a forced marriage to an American missionary, more intent on her body than her soul. ![]() Comfort Woman, the title of Nora Okja Keller's brave and utterly compelling first novel, tells of one such woman, the Korean Akiko, and her first-generation Hawaiian -American daughter Beccah. That’s all according to Dan Koeppel, author of “ Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World. The fungus that’s hunting the banana is Panama disease (aka Fusarium wilt), and about 10 years ago, it was mostly in Asia, but earlier this year, it made its first appearance in Columbia, where it directly affects the banana supply in the U.S. Cavendish bananas seem to be abundant in grocery stores, but a fungus has been threatening its existence for years, and saving it might become a technological endeavor. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Roth skillfully weaves the careful world-building and intricate web of characters that distinguished Divergent." -VOYA (starred review) #1 New York Times bestseller * Wall Street Journal bestseller * USA Today bestseller * #1 IndieBound bestseller In a stunning twist, the two will discover how fate defines their lives in ways most unexpected.
